One of the highlights of every year is our visit from Bill McLennan. Bill is the Projects Manager and Curator for UBC Museum of Anthropology and we use his book The Transforming Image: Painted Arts of Northwest Coast Art, that he co authored with Karen Duffek, as a class reference.
Many pictures from the Image Recovery Project, the project that lead to publishing the book, are presented to the class. Among Bill`s travels to many museums and collections around the world are the thousands of images that he so thoughtfully shares with us for discussion.
Dempsey Bob, in conjunction with Bill`s lecture, comes in to share his ideas and knowledge on so many of the images. Bill chooses pictures that are relevant to what we are teaching in the class; bowls, portrait masks, crest masks. He goes one step further still by presenting examples from various cultural groups such as Gitxsan, Nisga’a, Tlingit, Tsimshian, Nuxalk. This kind of preparation really gives our students a look of what was found in their communities and gives instigation to their own studies. Dempsey, Stan, Ken and Dean really push the students to explore their own cultural style and with a 2 day presentation like Bills it gets the students eager to learn.
