The work has begun on the totem pole for the new Smithers campus. Over the next two months, we will be following the transformation of the log into a totem pole.
The log arrives from Hazelton to Smithers temporary campus where it will be carved.
The totem pole starts as a 34-foot red cedar and it is trimmed to 28-feet.
The Carvers
Ron Austin James Madam
After trimming the log, Ron and James remove the bark and sapwood from the sides.
The heart of the log is removed to help stop checking (splits or cracks) in the totem pole.
I love that I can see and learn about carving the totem pole through the pictures and narrative. Very interesting!
